Project PANOPTES
Revolutionizing Exoplanet Discovery:
Project Panoptes Unlocks the Cosmos on a Budget with Efficient and Affordable Solutions.
Introducing PANOPTES ( Panoptic Astronomical Networked Observatories for a Public Transiting Exoplanets Survey). This groundbreaking initiative aims to deploy compact robotic telescopes designed for continuous, high-precision photometry—measuring characteristics like light intensity and color. PANOPTES will meticulously observe several million stars over an extended period, building upon successful exoplanet transit programs. The goal is to expand the scope to include a greater number of targets and enhance time coverage for a comprehensive exploration of our universe.

Precision
The PANOPTES System Elevates Exoplanet Studies Across Millions of Stars, Expanding Targets and Time Coverage!
Using high‑precision differential photometry, each PANOPTES unit measures minute variations in stellar flux as planets transit their host stars. This technique—validated as the most successful exoplanet detection method to date—detects periodic dips in brightness with millimagnitude accuracy, allowing researchers to infer planetary radius, orbital period, and atmospheric composition. The network’s optical design employs wide‑aperture, dual‑camera systems optimized for simultaneous multi‑target monitoring, significantly increasing temporal coverage and reducing false‑positive rates compared to single‑instrument surveys
The PANOPTES Network supports a wide range of activities:
– Science collaboration and shared research opportunities
– Career pathways, talent matching, and mentorship
– Startup incubation and entrepreneurial support
– Think‑tank resources for policy and innovation
– Science and technology development programs
– Economic development initiatives
– Projects aligned with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals
– A testbed for sustainable technologies and community‑driven solutions
– Support for schools, labs, teachers, and students in STEM and entrepreneurship

Progress
For more than 15 years, the PANOPTES project has demonstrated exceptional durability and scientific value, with its original hardware continuously collecting data from iconic locations such as Mount Wilson, Caltech, JPL, and even Bhutan. This long‑term stability has proven the robustness of the concept and established PANOPTES as one of the most accessible and resilient astronomical instrumentation platforms in the world.
Building on this foundation, we have now entered a new phase of technological advancement. The advanced prototype, developed and produced at EPFL in Lausanne with the support of leading scientific partners, is already collecting high‑quality data. Several refinements to this advanced unit are currently being finalized, ensuring that the next generation of PANOPTES systems will deliver even greater performance, reliability, and scientific reach.
In parallel, four eye‑pairs and several additional units are being built in synchronized production efforts in Hawaii and California, preparing a coordinated rollout of benchmark systems. These benchmark units will serve as the backbone for the next expansion wave, enabling rapid deployment with key partners in North Africa, South Africa, California, and other strategic regions.
This deployment strategy is designed to catalyze growth across Francophone Africa, Southern Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, creating a globally distributed network capable of producing unprecedented volumes of open astronomical data. With over 150 committed partners already engaged across three continents, the demand and readiness for expansion are firmly in place.
We are now securing the funding required to scale this network, accelerate manufacturing, and support deployment teams across our priority regions. Investor support at this stage will directly enable:
-
Production of the next wave of advanced units
-
Deployment of benchmark systems with key institutional partners
-
Training and onboarding of regional teams
-
Establishment of a sustainable, globally distributed data‑collection network
-
Expansion into underserved regions where scientific infrastructure is most needed
PANOPTES is no longer a concept—it is a proven, operational, and globally recognized platform entering its scale‑up phase. With your investment, we can transform a successful long‑term scientific initiative into a worldwide network that democratizes access to astronomy, empowers emerging scientific communities, and generates open data for researchers everywhere.
